REED:
The brass strip or blade which vibrates within the harmonica to produce the sound.

VALVES:
A device used in chromatic harmonicas to prevent air from leaking past the unused reeds. They are also called "windsavers". Originally they were made out of pigskin but now they are made out of a synthetic material.

REED PLATE:
The metal plate to which the reeds are attached.

BODY:
Piece of wood, acrylic, or ABS plastic with canals which directs the air to the reeds. The body of the instrument is also know as a comb, easel or castle.

MOUTHPIECE:
The front part of the harmonica where the holes are located. The mouthpiece of a chromatic is a separate piece made out of metal. The mouthpiece of a diatonic harmonica is the front edge of the harmonica body.

SLIDE:
The sliding metal devise on a chromatic harmonica which regulates the flow of air from one set of reeds to another. The slide is operated by the index finger. It works through a spring system which restores it back to the initial position.

COMBO:
A body and set of reed plates without the mouthpiece and cover plates.
