1.2 Double Reed Harmonicas

Double Reed Harmonicas are Harmonicas which produce sounds by the simultaneous vibrations or two reeds per note.

These harmonicas produce a very lush full tone and are especially popular for playing certain types of folk and ethnic music.

Double Reed Harmonicas do not easily allow the techniques of Bending, Over Blowing and OverDrawING, and therefore are not recommended to be used to play blues or rock styles.

There are two main types of Double Reed Harmonicas:

  • Octave Harmonicas
  • Tremolo Harmonicas
1.2.1 Octave Harmonicas (reeds tuned in octave)

Octave harmonicas are harmonicas which produce sounds by the simultaneous vibration of two reeds in a double hole, tuned one octave apart from each other. The resulting sound is strong and full bodied without a tremolo effect.

HERING manufactures several models of octave harmonicas, all of which feature a curved mouthpiece:

  • SERENATA: octave tuned, keys of E
  • SEDUCTORA: octave tuned, keys of C
  • SONHADORA: octave tuned, keys of C
  • SONHADORA: Double harmonica, octave tuned, keys of C and G
  • GOLDEN SOUND: Double harmonica, octave tuned, keys of Bb and F
  • CARAMBOLA: A set of four harmonicas, straight mouthpiece, keys of F, C, G and D
Double harmonicas are two harmonicas built back to back on one body. Each of the two harmonicas of a double harmonica are tuned to separate keys, a fifth apart. For example, one side of the SONHADORA harmonica is tuned to the key of C (Do) while the other side is tuned to G (Sol).

1.2.2 Tremolo Harmonicas (reeds tuned in tremolo)

Tremolo Harmonicas are harmonicas which produce sounds by the simultaneous vibration of two reeds in a double hole, tuned with a slight difference in the tonality resulting in a pleasant tremolo sound.

HERING manufactures two models of tremolo tuned harmonicas:

  • MELODIOSA: straight mouthpiece, key of A
  • VENCEDORA: straight mouthpiece, double harmonica, key of A and E
Other type of Diatonic Harmonicas: Richter System Harmonicas
