FEATURES

The Chromatic Harmonica is a relatively new instrument developed in the 1920s.

The instrument can be thought of as a combination of two diatonic harmonicas tuned a half step apart.

These models incorporate the full chromatic scale and allow a player using one harmonica to play in any key.

Chromatic harmonicas provide complete 12-note octave which include all the sharps and flats. Each hole contains four reeds: two for the natural notes and two for "chromatic" notes.

The reeds for the "chromatic" notes are brought into operation by pushing a slide button on the side of the harmonica. This closes off the air flow to one set or reeds while allowing the other set to vibrate freely.

The instrument is preferred harmonica for playing Classical, Jazz, and "Bossa Nova" styles. Chromatic harmonicas can also be used for Blues, Folk and Popular Music.

POSITION OF THE NOTES

HOW TO PLAY YOUR HARMONICA

Firmly hold the harmonica between the forefinger and thumb of your left hand. Ensure that the lower pitch notes are at the left end, and the higher pitched notes are the right end.

Your right hand should be comfortably cupped over the right end of the harmonica, and over the fingers of your left hand.

Mouthpiece:
You may use either or both of 2 different techniques to play harmonica.

a) Blowing Technique
Often described as the kiss, or center-blow, blow or draw only one of the harmonica holes, as shown. Only one note will sound.

b) Tongue-blocking technique:
Place your harmonica to your lips, blowing 2 or 3 holes. Then position your tongue over the holes on the left side, and support your tongue aganist the mounthpiece, or comb, leaving only one hole open on the right side of your mounth, so that only one note sounds.
