Reeds

  • To create sound, reeds have to vibrate freely in a slot. In order to vibrate at the correct frequency to achieve a particular note the reed has to be of a predetermined thickness, length and weight. The material used is generally a brass alloy to give long life, and a good tone. As an example, the number of times per second (Hz) that a reed tuned to `A` will vibrate at, is nominally 440Hz. Put another way this is a staggering 26,400 times every minute!
  • Understandably, it is possible for the metal of the reed to become fatigued after a period of time. The effect of this is that the reed will vibrate more slowly and consequently will sound flat and out of tune.
  • The deposits already described in the previous section can have the same effect of slowing down the speed of the vibration by making the reed tip heavier.
  • Prolonged use without any maintenance can also see slight misalignment take place of the reeds in their slot. The reed will either buzz or perhaps even stick, preventing any sound from being made. Occasionally you can rectify this fault yourself. However, if in any doubt leave it to the manufacturer or a good repairer.
