Cleaning
Cleaning of harmonicas requires the instrument to be taken apart. Care should be taken not to damage the reeds or reed plates in the process, as they are delicate. Note also the positions of the components to avoid re-assembling the parts in the wrong order.
Inspection of the parts will probably reveal a build up of a flaky material particularly around the entrance to the airways. This material will invariably be formed from saliva and sugar, from soft drinks or beer etc., that has dried out following many times of being played. It should be carefully removed avoiding scoring any of the parts. The ideal tool for this is a toothbrush.
Check that nothing else is obviously wrong before re-assembling the harmonica.
When re-assembling the harmonica do not over tighten the fixing screws as this could cause distortion of the reed plates or the comb.
